It was a perfect autumn day in Indianapolis for the first annual Earth Charter Summit, held at the Marian College campus, community minded people gathered to participate with twelve other Earth Charter cities in celebration and support of the Earth Charter principles. Connected via satellite, participants engaged in dialogue and heard speakers such as David Korten speak of new possibilities for the world. Participants could also join smaller, local forums in the Marian classrooms, to formulate a vision for Indianapolis. On the lawn, organizations tabled and conducted teach-ins on everything from community supported agriculture to union organizing. Other activities included the creation of a global patchwork quilt, music and dancing, children’s games and storytelling, and the collection of signatures on the Earth Charter itself. http://earthcharter.org
As Coordinator of this event, I lead a spirited group of volunteers to envision the project and create the means to make it happen. I worked closely with the Marian College liaison to negotiate space, food service, security and first aid, recycling and waste removal, etc. I created a database of supporters, volunteers and sponsors and used it to raise funds, promote the event and secure in-kind contributions.
